Rest in Peace

Tuesday 11th January 2011

A
n agency phoned today to offer work at a local school on Monday 17th January 2011. My father’s interment is on that day, so I could not accept. When my mother asked which day was best, assuming she was given the choice near a weekend, I opted for Monday as it was more likely to be quiet than a Friday. Of all the days I could have worked at the start of the term, they had to offer the one day when I could not. Of course I do not begrudge my father at all and would have been at the interment, come hell or high water. However, before the agency moved in to under-cut me, the same school would probably have re-scheduled around what is a difficult situation. Now, the agency will just ask someone else to fill the assignment. During the Christmas holiday, the school sent me a card saying ‘best wishes and look forward to seeing you in the New Year’; as they would have when I worked for them direct. It gave me a glimmer of optimism at the time, but has a hollow ring now.
