British and American Music Events/ Albums of 1970

T
he following is a list of British/ American progressive and heavy rock albums of 1970 along with the music events of that year. I have also included some significant album releases from other genres.

·         Marc Bolan renames Tyrannosaurus Rex as T. Rex and switches from an acoustic style to electric.
·         Roy Carr joins the New Musical Express, to the present (2006).
·         Paul Gambaccini arrives in the UK from America as an Oxford student.
·         Michael Evers founds Pilton Festival, which later becomes Glastonbury Festival.
·         Gravy Train is formed in Lancashire by guitarist and vocalist Norman Barrett.
·         Nicky Horne joins BBC Radio 1.
·         Editor Jack Hutton leaves the Melody Maker to launch the new music title Sounds. Ray Coleman replaces him. Production editor Rob Houston leaves the Melody Maker.
·         Mick Jagger has a relationship with Californian blond Catherine James. He also has a relationship with another Californian blond Janice Kenner, his PA, to 1971. Marsha Hunt, US actress in Hair, has a daughter, Carys, by Mick Jagger. 
·         Freddie Mercury begins a relationship with Mary Austin, to 1976.
·         Mickie Most, working as an independent producer on the Beatles' Apple label with Mary Hopkin, produces Britain's Eurovision Song Contest entry Knock Knock Who's There? 
·         Ozzy Osbourne meets Sharon Arden, daughter of Don Arden, at her father's office.
·         Guitarist Andy Scott joins The Sweet from The Elastic Band.
·         Dorothy Squires spends £5,000 to hire the London Palladium for a comeback concert and sells out the theatre in a matter of hours.
·         Timebox change their name to Patto. The band is Mike Patto, Ollie Halsall, John Halsey and Clive Griffiths. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall become involved with Keith Tippet's Centipede project.

o        Atomic Roooster by Atomic Rooster is released on B&C.
o        Death Walks Behind You by Atomic Rooster is released on B&C.
o        Let it Be the thirteenth album by the Beatles is released on Apple (Parlophone) in the UK. 
o        Act One album by Beggar’s Opera is released on Vertigo.
o        Black Sabbath the first album by Black Sabbath is released on Vertigo.
o        Paranoid the second album by Black Sabbath, produced by Roger Bain, is released on Vertigo. It is a number one album in the UK chart.
o        Ahead Rings Out, the first album by Blodwyn Pig (Mick Abrahams), is released on Island. 
o        Getting to This, the second album by Blodwyn Pig, is released on Island. 
o        The Man Who Sold the World the third album by David Bowie is released on Mercury.
o        Daughter of Time, the third album by Colosseum, is released on Vertigo. Along with the first two albums, it influences Led Zeppelin and Chicago.
o        Air Conditioning, the first album by Curved Air, is released on Warner Bros.

o        Concerto for Group and Orchestra, the fourth album by Deep Purple Mk II, is released on Harvest.
o        Deep Purple In Rock, the fifth album by Deep Purple Mk II, is released on Harvest.
o        Blue album by the John Dummer Band is released on Vertigo. The album has a Roger Dean cover and the band later become Darts.
o        First Step, the first album by the Faces (Rod Stewart), is released on Warner Bros.
o        Full House, the fifth album by Fairport Convention, is released on Island.
o        A Song for Me, the first album by Family, is released.
o        Anyway, the second album by Family, is released.
o        Kiln House, the fifth album by Fleetwood Mac, is released on Reprise. The line-up is Jeremy Spencer slide guitar, vocals/ Danny Kirwan guitar, vocals/ John McVie bass/ Mick Fleetwood drums. Christine Perfect keyboards, vocals is a guest on the album.
o        Fire and Water, the third album by Free, is released on Island.
o        Highway, the fourth album by Free, is released on Island.

o        Trespass, the second album by Genesis, is released on Charisma.
o        Gracious album by Gracious, including Martin Kitcat on keyboards, is released on Vertigo.  
o        Godington Boundary album by Davey Graham is released.
o        Thank Christ for the Bomb by the Groundhogs is released on Liberty and sells 30,000 copies. Eccentric Man/ Status People the fourth single by the Groundhogs, Ship on the Ocean/ Soldier the fifth single by the Groundhogs and Ship on the Ocean/ Strange Town the sixth single by the Groundhogs are released.
o        Picnic double album is released on Harvest. The sampler includes

o        Benefit, the third album by Jethro Tull, with Martin Barre on guitar and Clive Bunker on drums, is released on Chrysalis.  
o        Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, the ninth album by the Kinks, is released on Pye. 
o        Led Zeppelin III by Led Zeppelin is released on Atlantic.
o        Fog on the Tyne by Lindisfarne, produced by Bob Johnston, is released on Charisma.

1970 mno
o        Seasons album by Magna Carta is released on Vertigo. The album is produced by Gus Dudgeon.
o        Man, the third album by Man, is released on Liberty.
o        Stormbringer, the first album by John and Beverley Martyn, is released on Island. It was originally intended as a Beverley Martyn solo album. The album is produced by Joe Boyd and includes Levon Helm, of The Band, on drums.
o        The Road to Ruin, the second and final album by John and Beverley Martyn, is released on Island. The album includes Danny Thompson on bass.
o        Alone Together, the first solo album by Dave Mason, is released on Island.
o        May Blitz album by May Blitz is released on Vertigo. The band is led by ex-Jeff Beck Group drummer Tony Newman.
o        Second Of May Blitz album by May Blitz is released on Vertigo.
o        McCartney, the first album by Paul McCartney without the Beatles is released on Apple.
o        McDonald and Giles album by Michael Giles and Ian McDonald is released.
o        A Question of Balance, the sixth album by the Moody Blues, is released on Threshold.
o        Mad Shadows, the second album by Mott the Hoople, is released on Island.
o        Shazam by The Move is released on Fly. It is Bev Bevan’s favourite Move album because it is heavy and his playing is hard and loose. He thought Useless Information instead of Wild Tiger Woman should have been a single.
o        Five Bridges Suite, the fourth album by the Nice, is released on Charisma.
o        To Markos III, the third album by Nirvana [UK] is released. Nirvana is a duo consisting of Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Alex Spyropoulos.

o        Patto, the first album by Patto, is released on Vertigo. It sells 5,000 copies. The band includes Ollie Halsall and Tony Newman.
o        Quatermass by Quatermass is released on Harvest/EMI. The album includes Black Sheep of the Family (3:33) written by Steve Hammond. The band are Mick Underwood drums, Johnny Gustafson vocals bass, Peter Robinson keyboards.
o        Quintessence, the second album by Quintessence, is released on Island.
o        Space Hymns album by Ramases, including members of 10cc on backing vocals, is released.
o        Get Yer Ya-Yas Out, the ninth album by the Rolling Stones, is released on Decca.

1970 stu
o        Skin Alley, the first album by Skin Alley, is released on CBS. The group is Thomas Crimble keyboards bass vocals, Rob James saxophone guitar, Krzystof Henryk Justkiewicz keyboards, Alvin Pope drums, Nick Graham vocals keyboards bass flute, Tony Knight, real name Tony Brown and former member of the Chessmen, drums vocals. 
o        To Pagham and Beyond, the second album by Skin Alley, is released on CBS.
o        The Last Puff, the fourth album by Spooky Tooth, is released on Island Records. The group features Mike Harrison keyboards vocals, Henry McCullough guitar, Chris Stainton keyboards and Alan Spenner bass.
o        Mona Bone Jakon, the third album by Cat Stevens, is released on Island.
o        Gasoline Alley, the second album by Rod Stewart, is released on Vertigo.
o        Stray, the first album by Stray, is released.
o        Supertramp the first album by Supertramp is released on A&M.
o        Cricklewood Green, the fifth album by Ten Years After, is released on Decca.
o        Watt, the sixth album by Ten Years After, is released on Decca.
o        Hollywood Dream, the first and only album by Thunderclap Newman, is released on Track.
o        John Barleycorn Must Die, the fourth album by Traffic, is released on Island.
o        Trapeze, the first album by Trapeze, is released on Threshold.
o        Medusa, the second album by Trapeze, is released on Threshold.
o        Very 'eavy . . . Very 'umble the first album by Uriah Heep is released on Vertigo.

o        Wishbone Ash the first album by Wishbone Ash is released on MCA.
o        The Who Live at Leeds, the fifth album by the Who is released on Track. Most of their performance of Tommy is not included on the album.  
o        Time and a Word by Yes, the second album by Yes, is released on Atlantic.

THE FIRST FUNK RECORD


·         Sunday Morning Coming Down, written by Kris Kristofferson and performed by Johnny Cash, is awarded Best Song at the Country Music Awards.
·         Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So) by The Chi-Lites is released. The horns are later sampled on Crazy in Love by Beyonce Knowles.
·         The Alice Cooper band of Vincent Furnier vocals, Glen Buxton guitar, Michael Bruce guitar, Dennis Dunaway guitar and Neal Smith drums, relocate from Hollywood LA to Detroit and come to the attention of producer Bob Ezrin and Warner Bros. Records. 
·         Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators is released from the state mental hospital.
·         Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio are the only remaining original members of The Four Seasons. They obtain the rights to all of their back-catalogue, but are trailed by serious debts. Bob Crewe is threatened with bankruptcy. Arranger Charles Calello quits the music business to live in a commune.  
·         A more portable synthesizer, the Minimoog, is developed by Robert Moog, helping the instrument to define progressive rock music by Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and Yes. Moogs are also used in the jazz of Sun Ra, the soul of Stevie Wonder and the funk of Parliament/Funkadelic.
·         Diana Ross leaves The Supremes and has a hit with Ain't No Mountain High Enough.
·         Ray Stevens (born Harold Ray Ragsdale) has his fourth US hit with the Vietnam War-inspired Everything is Beautiful.  
·         Billy Yule replaces Mo Tucker in the Velvet Underground.
·         Syreeta Wright marries Stevie Wonder, to 1972.
·         Express Yourself (Charles Wright) track by Charles Wright.

o        Bread, the first album by Bread, is released on Elektra. 
o        On the Waters, the second album by Bread, is released on Elektra.
o        Sex Machine album by James Brown is released.
o        The Ballad of Easy Rider, the eighth album by the Byrds, is released on CBS.
o        Untitled, the ninth album by the Byrds, is released as a CBS double.
o        Cactus, the first album by Cactus (Bogart and Appice), is released on Atlantic.
o        The Johnny Cash Show, the thirty-ninth album by Johnny Cash is released.
o        Little Fauss and Big Halsy original soundtrack, the fortieth album by Johnny Cash, is released.
o        The World of Johnny Cash, the forty-first album by Johnny Cash, is released.
o        Easy Action the second album by Alice Cooper is released on Straight Records.
o        Deja Vu album by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young is released on Atlantic. It includes the studio version of Ohio.

o        Morrison Hotel, the fifth album by the Doors, is released on Elektra.
o        Absolutely Live, the sixth album by the Doors, is released on Elektra.
o        Self-portrait, the tenth album by Bob Dylan, is released on CBS.
o        New Morning, the eleventh album by Bob Dylan, is released on CBS.

o        On Time, the first album by Grand Funk Railroad, is released on Capitol. 
o        Grand Funk, the second album by Grand Funk Railroad, is released on Capitol.
o        Closer to Home, the third album by Grand Funk Railroad, is released on Capitol.
o        Live Dead, the fourth album by the Grateful Dead, is released on Warner Brothers.
o        Workingman's Dead, the fifth album by the Grateful Dead, is released on Warner Brothers.
o        American Beauty, the sixth album by the Grateful Dead, is released on Warner Brothers.
o        Hawkwind the first album by Hawkwind is released on United Artists.
o        Band of Gypsies by Band of Gypsies, the fourth authorised album by Jimi Hendrix is released on Track.
o        Cry of Love, the fifth authorised album by Jimi Hendrix, with Buddy Cox and Mitch Mitchell, is released on Track.

o        Your Saving Grace, the fourth album by Steve Miller, with Nicky Hopkins, is released on Capitol.
o        Number Five, the fifth album by Steve Miller is released on Capitol.
o        Mountain Climbing!, the first album by Mountain, is released on Bell.

o        Just for Love, the fourth album by Quicksilver Messenger Service is released on Capitol. English keyboard player Nicky Hopkins plays on the album but leaves before its release. Gary Duncan and Dino Valenti return to the group for this album. 
o        Come to My Garden, the first album by Minnie Riperton, is released on GRT. It includes Les Fleur, later used in TV commercials for Bailey’s liquer (2007-08) and BBC’s Life in the Undergrowth documentary.

o        Santana, the first album by Santana, is released on CBS.
o        Abraxas, the second album by Santana, is released on CBS.
o        Bridge Over Troubled Water, the sixth and final album by Simon and Garfunkle, is released on CBS. The album remains in the chart for six years. The duo split.
o        Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus, the fourth album by Spirit, is released on Epic.
o        Kingdom Come the first album by Sir Lord Baltimore is released. It is produced by Eddie Kramer.
o        Stephen Stills, the first solo album by Stephen Stills, backed by Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, John Sebastian and David Crosby, is released on Atlantic.
o        Sweet Baby James album by James Taylor, including Fire and Rain, is released.

o        After the Gold Rush album by Neil Young is released on Reprise. Crazy Horse and Nils Lofgren play on the album.
o        Hot Rats album by Frank Zappa is released on Bizarre.
o        Goin' Back to Colorado, the second album by Zephyr, is released on Warner Brothers. The group includes guitarist Tommy Bolin, and the husband and wife duo of bassist David Givens and singer Candy Givens.
o        First Album by Z. Z. Top is released on London.
